The jeep safari is the quintessential Chitwan experience. You’ll venture deep into the park’s core zone — areas that are strictly off-limits to foot traffic — in a modified 4×4 vehicle with an expert naturalist guide. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times, when wildlife is most active.
One of Chitwan’s most beloved activities — watching or participating in elephant bathing is a genuinely joyful experience. The resident elephants are bathed each day in the Rapti River, and visitors can observe from the banks while the mahouts and elephants splash, roll, and play.
Glide silently along the Rapti River in a dugout canoe as gharial crocodiles sun themselves on the banks and kingfishers dart overhead. This peaceful experience offers exceptional bird watching and the occasional glimpse of rhinos drinking at the water’s edge.
A guided nature walk through the buffer zone forests is a completely different experience from a jeep safari. On foot, you notice everything — the calls of hornbills, the tracks of rhinos in the mud, medicinal plants used by local communities, and the intricate web of jungle ecology explained by your expert guide.

The Tharu people are the indigenous inhabitants of the Chitwan lowlands, and their culture is as fascinating as the wildlife. Every evening, local Tharu groups perform traditional stick dances, fire dances, and folk music that tell the stories of their ancestors and their relationship with the jungle.
Experience Chitwan after dark on a guided jungle walk in the buffer zone. Armed with spotlights, you’ll discover the nocturnal world of civets, spotted deer, owls, and occasionally — if you’re very lucky — leopards.
Several observation towers are positioned at key wildlife corridors throughout the park. Spending an hour at sunset in one of these towers, watching herds of spotted deer and rhinos move through the elephant grass as the sky turns orange, is unforgettable.

The best time to visit Chitwan is from October to March when the weather is cool and clear, vegetation is lower (better wildlife visibility), and conditions are ideal for all activities. April and May are also good but warmer. The park partially closes from June to September during monsoon season.
